Both sides of the Desk

Ken Robinson has practiced business immigration from two very different seats. For years he worked inside a large law firm, where the research was shared, the drafting got passed down to paralegals and support staff, and his job was the big picture. Today he runs his own solo practice. He does all of the work himself, and he's doing better than before.

The constant across both chapters is Visalaw AI.

"I probably wouldn't do this without Visalaw AI," Ken says of going solo. "It's like having a support paralegal and a researcher all in your back pocket."

At the large firm, Ken used the platform to move faster. He leaned on it for research and to confirm he was on the right track, or to get pointed to a better one. That value didn't change when he left. What changed was how much it mattered. On his own, there is no team down the hall to bounce ideas off of. Visalaw AI fills that gap.

The research is the anchor

Ken found Visalaw AI through an AILA posting about two years ago. He started using it the way most attorneys do, like a search engine. He typed in a discrete question and got an answer. What stood out right away was that it took him straight to the sources and highlighted them.

"My best use case is the research. I can accumulate various resources in just a few seconds to make sure I'm on the right track, or to put me on a different track. It probably saves me, on average, four to six hours a week. If I didn't have it, that's the work I'd need to do to come up with the same answers."

The time savings show up in small daily tasks, too. Ken uses it a couple of times a week to draft client emails that explain benefit options, pros and cons, and next steps. "An email that would have taken me a half an hour is now done in three minutes."

A trusted second set of eyes

What Ken values most about the platform now is its judgment. He is moving from using it purely for speed toward using it for deeper analysis; the kind that helps him think through a hard RFE or NOID. He calls it a digital paralegal with years of experience; a virtual colleague a solo practitioner wouldn’t otherwise have.

Ken understands that the demands of immigration law require better tools than we have now, "We can't know everything about immigration law. When I get a crimmigration question where I don't know what to do, now I first go to Visalaw and ask it to do its thing."

The business case writes itself

Ken has found practical and repeatable tasks to use Visalaw AI for. Right now, the platform saves him 4-6 hours a week. But, he expects it to be more as he develops more sophisticated systems.

"For two hundred and something dollars a month, it's insane not to have this weapon in your arsenal."

The result has changed how he runs his practice. Ken has lowered his rates and still comes out ahead.

"My clients love it. I reduced my hourly rate by three hundred dollars," he says. "And I'm doing great, and the clients are doing great, so it's fun."

When his wife asked whether he would go back to a big firm, Ken showed her his billing from last month. It was a no brainer, working for himself was the right decision for him. He explained, "I don't know if I would have the confidence to go out on my own, as I'm doing now, without Visalaw AI."

The bigger picture

Ken sees Visalaw AI as a tool that can make lawyers better, not just faster, and that is where he is heading next. He is starting to feed his own draft petitions back into the platform to find weaknesses before USCIS does. For an attorney who built a career on careful briefing and advocacy, that is the highest compliment he can pay a product. He trusts it enough to check his own work.
